Gaviscon forms a protective layer that floats above the stomach contents. This layer prevents stomach acid from flowing back into the esophagus, relieving heartburn and discomfort in the throat and mouth. Heartburn can occur after meals (for example, when eating fatty or spicy foods), during pregnancy, or in patients with symptoms related to inflammation of the esophageal wall (for example, difficulty and/or pain when swallowing, sore mouth, vomiting). Gaviscon is used to treat symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux, such as acid regurgitation, heartburn, and indigestion (related to reflux), which can occur, for example, after meals, during pregnancy, or in patients with symptoms related to inflammation of the esophagus (esophagitis).
